“A GOOD head and a good heart are always a formidable combination.”
This quote by former president Nelson Mandela, proudly displayed at Bothas Incorporated, is testament to what a small attorney, notary, and conveyancing firm can accomplish with the right skill set and attitude. During the past few weeks there has been great excitement at Bothas Incorporated as the firm celebrated several achievements, looking back on more than 50 years of industry success.
Journey of success
Founded in 1973, this became an incorporated company in 1994 – celebrating 51 years in business this year. “The journey has not been without its ups and downs,” notes Lucas Wilhelmus Landman, senior director of the firm for the
past 27 years.
“Together with the triumphs, there have been many obstacles to overcome, but with guidance from our Heavenly Father, we have been blessed with amazing business opportunities, great colleagues, loyal clients, and a devoted team who have weathered the storms alongside us. We really do value people and the relationships we build.”
Until recently, the primary focus of the firm has been conveyancing, notarial work, estate planning, estate windingup, and commercial work. However, with the appointment of the enthusiastic professional assistant, Peter Mc Intyre, the firm is growing both its litigation and labour departments in its continued pursuance to provide clients with a well-rounded set of legal solutions.
“We are committed to our ‘out of the box’ way of thinking and to problem solving our clients’ legal matters with the required degree of professionalism,” said Johannes ‘Joe’ Coetzee who heads up the firm’s estate planning department.
Upgrades and rebrands
Bothas Incorporated has two offices: the main branch at 7 Addison Street, Kingfisher Court in Empangeni, and the branch office at the Quay Walk Building, Tuzi Gazi Waterfront in Richards Bay. Both offices have recently undergone a major upgrade and
refurbishment to better underscore the contemporary corporate standing of the firm within the local business community.
In addition, the firm has undergone a rebranding in line with the upgrade of its offices. “The feedback received from clients and members of the public have been overwhelmingly positive,” comments Landman.
Sterling staff complement
Proverbially speaking, dynamite comes in small packages. As such there should be no underestimating the dynamic staff comprising three directors, a professional assistant, three conveyancing paralegals, a financial and office manageress, and two support staff.
The firm boasts three admitted conveyancers – Lucas Wilhelmus Landman (senior director – attorney/conveyancer/notary public), Johannes Coetzee (senior director – attorney/conveyancer) and the newest admission as conveyancer and director of the firm, Sulize Möller. Möller passing her conveyancing exam in September 2023 and her admittance as a conveyancer at her appearance at Pietermaritzburg’s High Court of South Africa on 26 April 2024 were proud moments.
“It was a moment I will treasure forever. The end product of many years of hard work. Words cannot truly express the immense gratitude I have to my husband and son, and each one of my other family members, friends and colleagues who supported all the way,” she said. “Lucas, Joe and my family at Bothas Incorporated were instrumental in where I am today and what I have achieved and I thank God for every one of them! “Special thanks to Simonne Nurse from CWN who represented me on the day of the appearance, and her partners, Guiseppe Cocciante and Marco Whalley and to the entire CWN team who continue to be a source of great support,” Möller concluded.
Community commitment
Besides their commitment to attending to their client’s legal matters, the firm supports various charities and organisations in Zululand. The directors are also very active in the local community with the aim of making a positive contribution to people’s lives.
When not at the office, Sulize enjoys spending time with her family and has recently started sewing lessons in pursuit of her childhood love and fascination with needlework.
Lucas can be found golfing or clay pigeon shooting in his free time. He is also an avid ski-boat fisherman who recently obtained his South African colours in fishing for billfish at the National Championship in Sodwana where he captained the South African team.
Lucas and Peter also play competitive and social bowls, while Joe prefers spending his time cycling or behind the lens of his camera outdoors.
